Micron Bolsters User Security With New Solid-State Drive Featuring Self Encryption for Laptops and Desktops

C400 SED Offers Extreme Stability and Robust Protection

Micron Solid-State Drive C400 SED Featuring Self Encryption picture 1
BOISE, Idaho, Sept. 20, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:MU), today introduced a new version of its popular RealSSD™ C400, featuring self encryption for unmatched data security. The C400 SED (Self-Encrypting Drive) is based on the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Opal specifications and provides a hardware-based answer for the increasing wave of data breaches that continue to impact computer users and enterprises worldwide.

Security breaches caused by malicious attacks are on the rise, according to the recent Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report. While its notable that the increase in small-scale external attacks doesnt rely on highly sophisticated approaches, encryption is widely credited as the first choice for the most affordable security solution for deterring such intrusions.

"Self-encrypting drives represent the future of data protection," said Dr. Joerg Borchert, 2011 president and chairman of the nonprofit Trusted Computing Group. "Hardware encryption provides the strongest security and best performance, and solid-state technology like Microns will provide even quicker data access."

The C400 SEDs encryption capabilities are delivered through a hardware-based, AES-256-bit encryption engine and advanced security firmware. Microns firmware is designed to comply with the TCG Opal specification. TCG Opal is an open industry standard that provides a verifiable path for companies who need to prove theyre compliant with tough data security regulations when devices or drives are lost or stolen.

Like all hardware-encryption, the drive works in conjunction with an encryption management system. Microns C400 SED solution was built in partnership with leading encryption management provider Wave Systems (Nasdaq:WAVX). Waves EMBASSY® management software provides policy-based access controls, comprehensive reporting, directory services integration and end-user access recovery that allows IT to cost-effectively implement and administer endpoint encryption. Importantly, Waves management software gives IT confidence that data is protected in the event that a computer—or the drive itself—is lost or stolen.

"Micron is a true innovator in the field of flash-based storage devices and we applaud their decision to incorporate Opal-based encryption on their new C400 drives," said Steven Sprague, CEO and President of Wave Systems. "By incorporating self-encryption in the C400 SED, Micron provides not only outstanding performance, but also the peace of mind that confidential information stored on a laptop is secure. Wave is excited about this new partnership with Micron and we look forward to providing our customers with a high performance SSD with strong data protection capabilities."

The security and reliability of Microns C400 SED was designed for large corporations, government systems and other multiple-user networks that require maximum security without cumbersome workflow interruptions or decreased performance.

Micron Solid-State Drive C400 SED Featuring Self Encryption picture 2
The C400s encryption key is protected within drive hardware—separate from the host. This is one reason why hardware-based encryption is superior to software encryption (an alternative solution that stores the encryption key in the computers memory, where its vulnerable to attack). Microns SED offers stronger security because the encryption key never leaves the drive. User authentication is performed by the drive prior to starting the operating system, ensuring independence from the operating system. Another disadvantage of software-based encryption is its dependence on the computers processor, which can degrade performance. In contrast, Microns C400 SED performs all encryption inside the SSDs controller, ensuring no system performance degradation.

"The C400 SED will help users and IT teams alike to sleep better at night. Weve leveraged our popular client SSD and partnered with the leading encryption management vendor to create a product that provides a solid defense against data theft," said Justin Sykes, Microns general manager of client SSD solutions. "With security breaches increasing for every type of user, this solution scales without sacrificing high performance or reliability."

The C400 SED SSD is available in 128-, 256-, and 512GB capacities, a SATA 6Gb/s interface, and 2.5 and 1.8-inch form factors. The drives sophisticated NAND management delivers sequential read and write speeds of up to 500 MB/s and 260 MB/s respectively — the same high performance as Microns popular C400. The drive will be sampling and in production in the fourth quarter of this year and will be available through Microns global distribution network.

Build and Design
The UL80Vt has a classy design. With a height of only 1.1 inches it is certainly a thin machine, and the inward chiseled sides make it look even thinner. The lid is the most visually attractive part of the notebook with its brushed aluminum back and angled hinge design. The island-style keyboard also adds to the visual appeal; it sits flush with the surface of the notebook. Although the UL80Vts 8-cell battery is large the designers cleverly integrated it between the display hinges for a flush appearance. The UL80Vt has an understated look and fits in both home and work environments.

The UL80Vt has a plastic construction with the exception of the aluminum-backed lid. All visible surfaces are glossy which means dust and fingerprints show up easily; keeping this notebook clean is a chore. The plastics themselves are of reasonable quality.

Unfortunately the good news ends here. The UL80Vts build quality and construction are subpar. I was able to visibly twist the chassis using only modest pressure, and pushing down on the touchpad literally causes the chassis to sag and touch the surface it is resting on.

This unusually high amount of flex indicates that the notebooks internal frame is not strong enough. The lid also twists easily despite the aluminum back. Furthermore, the plastic screen benzel below the lid is very flimsy and can easily be pulled away from the screen about a half centimeter. Pushing on this area causes the screen to bend outward uncomfortably far. Lastly, the plastic trim above the keyboard is unsecured and has a few millimeters of up-and-down play. Overall while the build materials themselves are of reasonable quality the strength and construction of the UL80Vt are disappointing.

Screen and Speakers
The UL80Vt has a 14-inch display with LED backlighting, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a 1366x768 resolution. Its glossy coating makes images look clearer at the expense of glare. The display has plenty of brightness but the contrast is low, making pictures look slightly washed out. Side-to-side viewing angles are adequate however are limited vertically; the display needs to be tilted just right to get an accurate picture. A better quality display would have been appreciated on a multimedia notebook like the UL80Vt.

The speakers are poor despite the Altec Lansing branding. They do not get loud enough and are very tinny. The headphone jack is fortunately static-free and the best way to get audio out of the notebook.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The UL80Vt has a chiclet/island style keyboard with extra space between keys. The keyboard is unfortunately mediocre and does not do anything well. While typing the keyboard feels loose as if it were merely resting on the chassis rather than being secured and has a cheap rattling sound, especially on the left side. Flex is also a problem on the left side. The tactile feedback is limited at best; there is not enough of it and key travel is too short. Moreover the keys are noisier than we prefer. As a result of these deficiencies typing is uncomfortable especially for extended periods.

The touchpad is also below average. Its glossy surface is difficult to track on and the single-piece button is somewhat noisy and difficult to press. I had to apply pressure at the far left and right edges of the button to get clicks to register.

Ports and Features
The UL80Vt has an adequate selection of ports, including HDMI. The notebook strangely does not have a Kensington Lock slot or built-in Bluetooth. All picture descriptions are left to right.

How To Take Care of your Laptop Battery

Laptop is currently a choice of many people to help various activities of daily work. However, not all Laptop users know how to treat a laptop and the batteries properly.  U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recorded at least no fewer than 47 cases a smoky or burning laptop, since January 2001 to August 2006.

Here are some tips to care for laptop battery that last longer:
  • Laptop Batteries, Do not drop, knock, crushed by heavy objects, or piled on top. This would result in battery circuits become vulnerable to short-circuit occurs (shorted), which then lead to overheating.
  • Do not place the laptop in the aera is very hot, such as in the hot sun or in the car parked in the open long enough during the day.
  • Do not use the laptop battery and charger are not compatible. If not sure of the compatibility of a replacement battery or charger to use, contact the service from the laptop manufacturer related.
  • Help prevent the contacts on the battery holder is loose with a variety of objects made of metal, such as paper clips, and so forth.
  • Wet or exposed to water, are things to avoid from a laptop or a battery. Although eventually will dry up and can function normally, the circuit inside the laptop or the battery will slowly rust which can cause damage to the battery itself.
  • When using a laptop, avoid putting your laptop on soft surfaces, such as on a sofa, bed or carpet. because it will inhibit the flow of air at the bottom of the laptop and can cause overheating.
  • Make sure you understand how to use, store and charge the batteries and laptop that have been written in the manual.

Apple MacBook Air 11 Mid 2011 Subnotebook Review

The smallest portable and cheaper than Apple currently offers is called the MacBook Air, 11 weighs less than a kilogram and is only 1.7 cm at the thickest point. Externally: aluminum unibody case. Inside: Sandy Bridge CPU, along with the SSD offers superior performance.

Apple has stuck to this policy for years: new trends, but do not jump on any bandwagon going. " So, for example netbook hype the past two years there is almost no sign of Apples product portfolio. Their response was to the IPAD, which produces results that we all know.

The MacBook Air back to 2008, its first generation, as the theme of "ultrabooks" that is especially thin laptops under $ 1,000, is currently being discussed by many manufacturers, it will be another knowing smile to remember the faces of computer users. In addition, 11 officers from the air price is $ 999, which is an incredible coincidence!

Specifications Apple Macbook Air 11 inch 2011-07 MC969D/A :

  • Operating System : Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
  • Additional features : Webcam: FaceTime Cam, 12 Months Warranty
Case
For the 11-inch laptop, like its big brother the MacBook Air 13, Apple uses the same chassis that was made so that the air in 2010. And almost a year later, the aluminum unibody is still one of the best materials the most demanding of today could call his own. The look, feel, quality of construction - there is simply no real points of criticism here.

On the contrary, the more you play with the laptop, the more satisfied you will receive in this regard. Details about the case can also be found in our previous test of the machine from 2010, which is of identical construction.

The keyboard is always backlit LEDs, whose brightness can be set at many different levels, such as screen brightness. Compared to 13 inches in the air, youll see almost the same layout and key size. Only the ranks of F and the extra features in it has been made thinner.

Connectivity
As with the Air 13-inch, Apple has added a port 11 Thunderbolt Air The other port remains unchanged from the previous model, meaning that you have to do with two USB 2.0 ports, ports and port helmet. Compared to the current 13-inch air, you must also do without an SD card reader.

This theme was Thunderbolt should be noted that there is much to benefit from this port, at the time. Only Apple provides an auto-compatible 27-inch (including additional ports), will cost about 900 euros. Lightning port can also be used for a mini-DisplayPort. Then, using the appropriate cable or adapter, a traditional display may also be connected to Air. Further information can be found in our review of the port 13 Thunderbolt MacBook Air

Communication
WLAN, which follows the 802.11 a / b / g is part of the standard material for this series, and Bluetooth 4.0. There is no RJ45 network port to be found, it was probably too big to Air. Apple does offer a suitable adapter for USB and slow it for a price of course (approx. 30 euros) or you can use the screen above Thunderbolt with its LAN port.

Guarantee
The manufacturers warranty for Apple MacBook 11 is 12 months. You can also purchase extended warranties of 12 or 24 months, including telephone support.

Display
Although the basic details of the screen has not changed - 11.6 in. Display, 1366 x 768 resolution, a shiny surface - it is still a new panel that has been integrated in this model. In our model of identifying the review committee LP116WH4-TJA3 and is manufactured by LG Philips. In some Internet forums, there are messages on a second screen version (LTH116AT01A04) that can be manufactured by Samsung.

Our LG screen has a maximum brightness of 355 cd / m² in the tests with the Mavo Gossen meters. The average brightness is still very bright 318 cd / m², making it one of the best in its class of machine. The black value of only 0.56 cd / m² is also excellent with an outstanding contrast ratio of 634:1.

Compared to its predecessor in 2010, which was equipped with a screen LTH116AT01A01, we see an improvement in brightness (up to 340 cd / m², average of 296 cd / m²).

AnandTech revised MacBook Air 11 with Samsung screen (LTH116AT01A04) in their machine. The panel shows a slightly worse black, but a higher peak brightness of 0.61 and 386 cd / m², respectively. No rules have yet been observed, which would decide which of the two possible display types used in the configuration.

A look at the color space can be represented produce any surprises. sRGB can not be completely covered, the predecessor of the machine of 2010 was more or less the same league, while the screen of the MacBook Air 13 in 2011 (LP133WP1-TJA3) covers practically the same size as the screen 11 inches from the same manufacturer.

The stability of viewing angles are quite comparable with the 13-inch model we tested, putting it slightly above average among the last laptops. Horizontally, even very wide viewing angles as possible without causing major problems, and in vertical direction, the more it deviates from the ideal straight on viewing angle, the picture is more wash or affected by the effect of well-known inversion.

Performance
A new processor Sandy Bridge gets its chance in this 11-inch MacBook Air, as in the 13 inch version. Starting level is a Core i5-2467M with a base speed of 1.6 GHz. The chip is slower than i5-2557M Processor (1.7 GHz), which is the starting point for the 13-inch model. As with the larger model, there is an option to switch to Core i7-2677M with 1.8 GHz.

Taking care of the graphics you need an Intel HD 3000 Graphics intregrated units in the CPU. But even here, the difference between a version of Apples 256 MB and 384 MB of shared memory. This is directly proportional to the amount of RAM in each model.

So begins 2 GB version (which are closely welded to bottom, not upgradeable!), Dynamic memory that is available on the GPU is limited to 256 MB, but the 4 GB of installed RAM, HD 3000 graphics may be a larger part of the series . But this does not change anything in the graphics department. Great video memory is usually necessary or useful for a game or multi-monitor setup.

CPU Performance
To judge the performance of the new Intel Core i5-2467M processor, we return to our CPU benchmark standard tools using Windows via Boot Camp. SuperPi in 32 M-test (calculation of exactly 32 million decimal places) MacBook Air with i5-2467M CPU needed just 903 seconds.

To compare: Intel Processor Arrandale ranks 460 / 520M at about the same level, while the new Intel Core i3-2310M processor Sandy Bridge is itself a bit longer (940-980) to complete the task. Apple MacBook Air 13 but with a little more powerful i5-2557M calculates much faster at 763 seconds, put it in the same league as Intel Core i5-2410M processor.

Looking back on the air 11 from 2010 with its SU9400 processor provides a powerful demonstration of improved performance: 1936 seconds, which means that the calculation of the speed is more than doubled.

While SuperPi uses only a single nucleus, the son wPrime calibration tool uses all the CPU. With 869.7 seconds in the test of 1024 m, our chip is just behind i3-2310M processor. The air stream 13 is also ahead here, with 764.6 seconds (i5-2557M). The CPU 13 of the Air SL9400 2010 was beaten back by almost 50%.

In Cinebench R10 (64 bit) CPU test only Air scored 3610 with 2467M processor, which can stand in front of Intel 2310M. The Air 2557M processor reaches 13 with 4201 points from the set at almost the same level as the mid-range processors 2410M. In the same test, but 32-bit mode, the new Air New beats its predecessor in 2010 by about double.

The results of multi-threaded Cinebench rendering test of (64 bits) is basically the same. With 7188 points in the Air from Apple, 11 in 2011 is just behind other notebooks with Intel Core i3-2310M processor. But with his 13 Air CPU 2557M is a part of the ground lost in the test score of 8266 points, which is a much better result than the air 11, but it is still clearly behind the other machines on the CPU 2410M.

Compared to the predecessor of Air 11, we again had to settle for 32-bit mode because of the lack of comparable data. With 5946 points to 2852 points, look back nine to beat the previous model from 2010 with SU9400 CPU with more than 100%.

In the end, ran Cinebench CPU R11.5 last. 1.9 points, ranking CPU 2467M almost the same level as Arrandale i3 330M CPU, the chip in late 2310 m modern. Air 2010 SU9400 reaches 0.9 points, while the ignition, surprise surprise, only about half of the performance of the new entry-level CPU 2467M.

Geekbench - CPU performance Mac OS X
The small ultra-thin notebook from Apple may also show its processing power when running Mac OS X. Especially when compared to the previous Core 2 Duo, Core i5 is considerably faster and can even get a head start on the 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo P8600 MacBook Pro in the 13 from 2010.

Throttling
We want a closer look at the limitation of subject because there have been some complaints about this in the past with other laptops from Apple. Again, we used Windows Boot Camp as our test platform, as analytical tools it offers, and MacOS.

I5 Intel 2467M used in this notebook, as its portfolio of adult colleagues Sandy Bridge CPU, the speed of bandwidth, in this case from 1.6 to 2.3 GHz, depending on the number of threads / cores on time. How does this dynamic range can be used in turbo depends more on the cooling power of a laptop case.

While in both cores idle still regularly come from 2299 MHz (high performance profile), the speed of the two nuclei falls to 1999 MHz under stress, ie in the SuperPi and Cinebench R10 test single CPU. Sometimes, just for a short time, an acceleration of a nucleus with its maximum at 2.3 GHz are observed.

In the multi-threaded Cinebench R10 and R11.5 CPU tests in Cine, the two cores were stable in 1999 MHz, consistent with our observations, although the experiments were carried out in an infinite loop.

He took the maximum Prime95 stress scenario and Furmark to win the frequencies into submission. Shortly after starting the stress test, we noticed the speed of 1199 MHz for both cores. About an hour after the pressure of the stress test finally identified after repeated, short-term reduction in CPU speed of 799 Mhz.

And interesting, we found the temperature of the CPU with HWMonitor always remained uncritical area of about 80 ° C. The power adapter is, however, touches the limits of the ability of suppliers of energy (45 watts), with peak values up to 44.9 watts during the test. This could be a possible explanation for the limitation that we have seen repeated.

We also had a detailed look at the pattern of behavior of the benchmark in the last MacBook Air, for example, showed an interesting trend to produce better results over time or with higher fan speed.

We start with the single CPU test Cine R10. In the test circuit is scored for 3517, 3562, 3591, 3565 and 3610 points. The fan continues to increase its speed to the end of the first test (from 80 ° C). Maximum temperature of the CPU, there was only about 80 ° C (second run-through), while after round temperature of about 70 ° C. No signs of strangulation here, done everything there is a slight improvement in baseline scores.

We tested the same model of analysis based this time in the film R10 benchmark multiple CPUs. It was noted the next set of results: 7024, 7141, 7126, 7117 and 7188, the fan reaches a speed of 5000 rpm in the third run-through and more importantly, the CPU temperature remained constant at just under 90 ° C thereafter.

In Cinebench R11.5 the latest processors, we saw an almost identical picture, with a score of 1.31, 1.91. 1.92 and 1.92 points. In the first run through, we saw CPU temperatures up to 97 ° C. After that, the fan speed increased, peaking at 6500 rpm, with which you can keep the CPU temperature 80-84 ° C. stable

Then also prepared a series of tests for MacOS X Cinebench, if only we have been able to measure the CPU temperature and fan speed with SMC fancontrol tool. In a single CPU test R10 Film, we observed the following series of results: 3142, 3194, 3150, 3159 and 3162.

In the first run through, the fan starts to increase speed of about 80 ° C to count. This prevents an increase in temperature above 80 ° C, after smcFanControl. In addition, the fan speed never exceeded 3500 rpm for our observations.

In multi-CPU Cinebench R10 test, we recorded the following result set: 6452, 6522, 6511, 6493, 6510, 6490 and 6520.

The first training started to increase the fan speed of about 90 ° C point. The fan speed is increased by subsequent run-through, and the CPU temperature was held constant significantly less than 90 ° C.

With MacOS as with Windows, a higher temperature in the test faster CPU Cinebench Cinebench R10 R11.5 in multi-CPU test. The fan starts quickly and has already reached its maximum at 6500 rpm for the first run through, keeping the CPU temperature below 80 ° C. It is much less than the same test when you run Windows, for example. Results: points 1.92, 1.93, 1.93 and 1.94.

Case
Just under 1 inch thick (0.99 inches to be exact), 5330m is the thinnest laptop around, but it definitely feels solid. Anodized aluminum casing and magnesium frame and to provide a portable hard and smooth feel. Base can flex a little , but it takes a good amount of torque to do it.

The cover could be a business, unfortunately, because the finger can depress the outside of homes without a lot of power, especially toward the center. In any case, "DuraFinish" wear protective coating breaking down glare is really good and a little difficult to collect fingerprints and scratches than the rest of the screen.

At 3.99 pounds (1.8 kg), believes Laptop dense and weighs about the same 13.3-inch Sony Vaio SB1Z9EB VC with the same processor configuration. The strong base means that the user can open the screen with one hand.

In terms of appearance, the look on the HP 5330m 4430, but with a much more square construction and minimalist. Instead of edges and curves round like many other laptops tend to follow, the 5330m is a bit of a retro and industrial construction. Unfortunately, this means that the visual appeal of the laptop will be all or nothing depending on user preferences. Those who want a stylish, ultra-modern to look elsewhere.

The hinges are good when working at a desk stable but not rigid enough to be used for train travel on bumpy surfaces or unstable otherwise. An angle of about 135 degrees is permissible before the bottom of the cap reaches the back of the notebook base.

Connections
The 5330m includes a sufficient number of physical connectivity options. The built-in card reader can be more versatile, as it only accepts two types of flash cards, SD and MMC. A USB 3.0 port would have been nice, especially since the 5330m sells more or less the price level of $ 1,000. However, ports that are present are easily accessible.

Although one of the three USB 2.0 ports are always on the charger port is not a visual indicator of what the connection is using. Typically, these USB ports are in yellow, but for some reason, HP has failed to respect the color code of each port. This particular port is located on the right side, mainly for the user.

Connectivity options include WLAN wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1 standard with the option of mobile broadband hardware. The review of models has a specific network card Broadcom 43224AGN 2x2 Wi-Fi, an HP Mobile Broadband WWAN un2430, and a Bluetooth adapter Broadcom 2070. Users in the United States may choose to WWAN for pay-as-you-go 3G DataPass. This special appeal to users without a two-year data with a large cellular operator.

Bluetooth allows, in particular, for coupling to the user smart phones, which can be used for authentication to connect to Windows if enabled. If the phone is out of reach for some reason, the user must answer three security questions as a substitute. These features, as well as the fingerprint reader, are part of HP ProtectTools.

Standard 1 year limited warranty applies to 5330m, plus a separate 1-year limited warranty on primary battery. Beyond the standard warranty, customers can use HP Care Pack for extras such as on-site repair (by region) and up to five years extended warranty.

Display
HP 5330m uses a 13.3-inch matte anti-glare with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels. This decision is common for laptops of this size, although laptops competitors can offer the highest resolution 1440x900 at a ratio 4:10 p.m. instead. Based on first impressions, the screen may have been a little clearer, but does the job.

With the X-Rite i1Display 2, a respectable maximum screen brightness of 208.8 nits was recorded on the center of the screen, although the distribution and contrast were quite poor all around. When unplugged, the maximum brightness dipped even lower.

As expected, the color space produced by the 5330m is limited, covering only about 60 percent of the sRGB standard. Compared to the recently released 14-inch ProBook 4430s, the 5330m is on par in terms of color representation, but both are no match for the 15.6-inch ProBook 6560b. Professional graphic artists or heavy Photoshop users should best stay away from the 5330m as a primary notebook.

Outdoor use was more difficult than it should have been because of the low brightness levels. Screen glare was not a problem, but expect to ramp up the brightness of the 5330m to its highest if using the notebook outdoors.

Viewing angle stability is notebook-typical for a TN panel. Horizontal viewing angles are tolerable, but colors begin shifting almost immediately if viewing at vertical angles from below. The limitation should be fine for a single user, but the notebook isn’t recommended for movies with multiple viewers.

Performance
Sandy Bridge Intel Core i5 is running 2520m-5330m 2.5GHz power. This dual-core processor is fast enough, with 3 MB L3 cache and support up to 4 threads. Turbo Boost, can automatically increase the clock speeds of up to a temporary single-core 3.2 GHz or 3.0 GHz for both cores.

As usual, the laptop with the second generation of Core processors, IX, 5330m is equipped with an Intel Integrated Graphics GPU HD 3000. This particular graphics accelerator to get the maximum 650MHz, but the Turbo Boost can temporarily take up to two times the 1300MHz. Unfortunately, DirectX is supported only up to 10.1 in contrast to the AMD Fusion APU, which supports DirectX 11 Graphics Integrated Intel borrow system RAM required.

Speaking of system RAM, the 5330m in a single module test has 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Micron, but it is expandable to 8 GB. To access the RAM, the user must remove the battery cover on the laptop and then proceed to loosen the three screws to expose the material.

The CPU-oriented benchmarks, the Core i5-2520m works very well. His score of 2349 points in PCMark 7 clearly outperforms the 13.3-inch Acer Aspire 3830TG (2.3GHz Core i5-2410M) and 14-inch HP EliteBook 4430 (2.1GHz Core i3-2310M), which received 1,675 and 1,995 points respectively in the same test. The HP 5330m also fits very well in the Cinebench R10 tests and the results are in line with the first generation of quad-core Core i7-720QM the Samsung RF710.

When taking into account the integrated GPU, however, the HP laptop will not compete with the latest entry-level discrete GPU. For example, Samsung QX412 the same processor, but to reach 2264 points in 3DMark Vantage 520M with its entry-level GeForce, while the HP in the downward revision scored 1755 points.

5330m notebook is not for the players, of course, but still much improved on the previous generation of Intel GMA HD. In this sense, the laptop should be more than capable of playing HD video, Flash content and extra-light games. See here for a review of the Intel graphics GPU HD 3000.

Review model has a 500GB 7200RPM Hitachi SATA II hard HTS725050A9A364, even though the SSD 128 GB and 320 GB of the SED (the encrypted disk) HDD options are available as well. The maximum capacity of about 13 GB is reserved for the section HP_Recovery and 5 GB for additional HP_Tools. HP ProtectTools, the entire disk can be encrypted for security reasons or to remove the hard drive several times Shredder is a choice, if necessary.

This Hitachi has shown an average transfer rate is 82.4MB/sec HDTune, which is significantly faster than the Seagate in 7200 ProBook 5310m, 7200-Western Digital VAIO SB1Z9EB and 5400RPM Hitachi, Samsung, QX412.

The built-in HD camera can record up to 720p (1280x720 pixels), but sacrifices the latencies framerate smoother and less as a benefit at lower resolutions. It is, however, the HP support face recognition to log on to Windows, if enabled.

Battery life
The test model is equipped with a 4-cell Li-ion polymer battery estimated at 14.8 V and 41WHr. The battery is located at the bottom of the laptop is flat and thin compared to larger batteries that connect to the backend of the laptop.

The HP Power Assistant provides direct access to the profiles of energy and wireless connections that allow users to quickly deactivate and change the configuration of the energy drain system easily with the default administrator Power Windows. It also includes an exchange program user-defined automatic power profile.

According 5330m BatteryEater Classic Test conducted an independent minimum 56 minutes before the automatic shutdown of 5%. This was done with full brightness, WLAN, and Windows Performance of high power option.

Maximum battery life of 299 minutes was obtained by the reader test, the lower screen brightness, wireless and disabled Windows power-saving mode. The more reality-oriented test was 66% of the brightness of the screen while surfing the Internet using Adobe Flash and Windows profile balanced. Notebook reached up to 191 minutes, but this can vary greatly depending on how many video applications, the user could be demanding.

As such, the actual execution time is strongly linked to user needs. The laptop will die very quickly with heavy-duty applications and work background as well, but should last much longer if used primarily for word processing, note taking and presentations. However, only about 3 hours of video with some mixed, it is recommended to keep the power adapter around.

By comparison, the largest 15.6-inch EliteBook 6560b with the same processor capable of a little over five hours when not in use, although it contains a larger 6-cell battery. The same equipment Lenovo ThinkPad X220 12.5 inches, 14-inch Toshiba Tecra R840-11E and 13.3-inch Sony Vaio PCV-SB1Z9EB can all take a few hours longer than 5330m.

Power consumption at rest in the lowest position comes to light of 14 watts, according to HP integrated power assistant. Under a load and a maximum brightness, the total power consumed is about 61 watts.

Dell Vostro V13

The Dell Vostro V13 is a slimline, 13.3in business notebook with plenty of style and a very sturdy body. It feels great to use and it has a decent amount of power under the hood. Best of all, it only weighs around 1.5kg. Its an almost perfect combination of size, speed and mobility.

An Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU powers the Dell Vostro V13, and its 1.3GHz clock speed and two CPU cores help move things along swiftly. You can multitask, watch high resolution videos or create media-rich presentations without getting bogged down. Helping the CPU are 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 500GB (5400rpm) hard drive and integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics.

In our WorldBench 6 benchmark suite the notebook scored 67. This means that, in terms of overall system performance, the Dell Vostro V13 is over twice as fast as a typical netbook with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom CPU and 1GB of RAM.

In our iTunes MP3 encoding and Blender 3D rendering tests, which primarily test CPU speed, the Dell Vostro V13 was approximately three times as fast as netbook. The hard drives performance was also impressive, recording a speed of 35 megabytes per second in our transfer tests. However, it is a big drive and it will inevitably slow down somewhat once you start to really fill it with files.

You can use the Dell Vostro V13 laptop for just about any office task. What it wont do is display 3D graphics smoothly. Its Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics adapter is fine for viewing videos, but it wont give you much grunt for real-time 3D rendering - it scored only 573 in the 3DMark06 benchmark. You will be able to play games on the laptop only if they are not graphically complex - think board games, stacking games and card games to pass the time with.

The Dell Vostro V13 is one of a number of ultraslim laptops to hit the market in recent times, but its design is a little different to the norm. It actually looks a lot like the Adamo by Dell. The screen is mounted almost 1cm in from the spine of the notebook, so its metal hinges are not located directly on the spine itself.

The spine acts as a handle of sorts. The location of the screen gives the notebook more strength and changes its centre of gravity. It feels beautifully balanced; when the notebook is lying flat on a desk, the screen can be lifted using only one hand (it doesnt have a latch). The hinges have just the right amount of resistance to allow precise adjustments.

Poor image editing skills aside, you can see that the Dell Vostro V13 (the right half of the image) shares the same hinge layout as the Adamo (the left half of the image). They also share a similar slim profile and sealed design.

The Dell Vostro V13s screen has a native resolution of 1366x768, plenty of brightness, and adequate viewing angles. The lid is made out of aluminium and does a good job of protecting the screen. You can press down on it or twist it and puddles wont appear on the screen. The chassis is only 1cm thick and feels equally strong (the Vostro V13 is only 1.8cm thick with its lid closed).

Its also made out of aluminium, while the palm rest is plastic. The notebook doesnt creak, nor does it bend when you hold it from either of its corners. Some vents are located on the bottom of the chassis, so if you use the Dell Vostro V13 on your lap it might get a little warm, but overall it wont be too uncomfortable. There is an air vent on the spine of the notebook that you should make sure you dont block.

The slim profile makes the Dell Vostro V13 look very elegant, while its light weight makes it easy to cart around without breaking your back. Even its power adaptor is only 15mm thick.

There are some drawbacks to the design of the Dell Vostro V13. The USB 2.0 ports are located on the spine of the notebook, rather than the sides, which makes them hard to access. The laptop only has two USB 2.0 ports - it could use at least one more. You also dont get any digital video output ports (you do get a VGA port, however). Perhaps the biggest drawback is that the battery is sealed in the chassis, so you cant just slot in a unit with a longer life.

More importantly, you cant carry a spare with you to prolong your productivity away from a power outlet. This probably isnt much of a concern for travellers spending time in airport lounges or on planes, but it would be nice to have the option to give the Dell Vostro V13 more juice. Its a 6-cell battery and it lasted two hours in our video rundown test, which is an average result.

The sealed design of the Dell Vostro V13 means that you cant replace the battery, nor access the memory and storage areas unless you take apart the entire unit.

Because the unit only has two USB 2.0 ports, the included ExpressCard/34 slot will be handy handy for installing a 3G adapter while leaving the ports free for external storage devices. It sits next to an SD card slot. The front of the Dell Vostro V13 has headphone and microphone ports, while the rear includes a Gigabit Ethernet port in addition to the two USB 2.0 ports and VGA port.

One of the USB 2.0 ports doubles as an eSATA port, which is very convenient for quickly backing up data to an external hard drive. We love the keyboard on the Dell Vostro V13: it has keys that are 18mm wide and have just the right amount of resistance. The keyboard bounces only slightly when you hit it, so its not as solid as it could be; thats understandable given the relatively low price point of the laptop. The only thing the keyboard could use to make it better is backlighting. The touchpad is big (81x44mm) and it has soft buttons that dont make a sound when you press them.

The Dell Vostro V13s keyboard and touchpad are very comfortable to use.

Acer Ferrari One FO200 1799

Acer Ferrari One Has Lexus Design but Gremlin Performance

Acers partnership with Ferrari to build laptops containing Ferrari design elements goes back at least to 2004. The Ferrari One, however, is a totally different machine from the large and expensive Ferrari laptops of the past. It weighs just 3.3 pounds with its standard six-cell battery in place, and it measures roughly an inch thick; yet it contains an Athlon X2 dual-core low-voltage CPU and 4GB of RAM. Is it a large and relatively high-powered netbook, or a small and somewhat low-powered ultraportable? From here, it appears to straddle the line effectively and appealingly.

The systems styling is great for fans of Ferrari Red. The laptop is quite thin and light, with a smooth glossy finish and nice lines. Only the large cooling vent on the left edge breaks up the sleek finish. Despite the svelte frame, Acer crams plenty of ports into the sides: three USB ports, gigabit ethernet, a VGA output, mic in and headphone out, a multicard reader slot, and even a slot for ATIs optional external graphics.

One of the best things about the Ferrari One is its low cost: The base price of $599 includes a 1366 by 768 backlit LED screen, which delivers nice contrast and color; a 250GB hard drive; 4GB of RAM; and Windows 7 Home Premium.

Toshiba Satellite L735 S3220RD

On the positive side, the Toshiba Satellite L735-S3220RD is an entry-level notebook with a good performance with the processor i5-2410M dual-core Intel Core processor and memory. It also has a trendy design that is light enough to travel. On the other hand, the laptop was only able to provide about three and a half life of hours of battery life and an all-plastic, built a small and fragile.

Specifications Toshiba Satellite L735-S3220RD :
  • 13.3-inch glossy 720p backlit display (16:9 aspect ratio, 1366x768 resolution)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

  • Weight: 4.6 lbs without battery
  • Dimensions:  12.95” x 8.7” x 1.10”~1.45
  • MSRP: $799.99
Building and Design
Like most entry-level laptops Toshiba Satellite series, the new 13.3-inch Satellite L735-S3220RD is composed almost entirely of molded plastic construction and family housing on the screen round the cover and the chassis.

This laptop features a red and black design dot matrix with a sheen finish from the merger of Toshiba. The glossy finish is the cover of the screen, surround sound screen, keyboard and palmrests. To add a touch of style, the area under the LCD screen has a bumpy texture to feel along with the dot design matix.

The overall dimensions are 12.95 "x 8.7" x 1.10 "~ 1.45" and weighs 4.6 pounds without the battery. This book is designed to please those who want a travel-friendly with a screen size slightly larger than the type of ultraportable netbook.

In general, the structure and design of the laptop Toshiba Satellite L735-S3220RD is made based on the average budget conscious consumer needs on the fly. The design is quite elegant, although the brightness tends to collect fingerprints easily almost entirely through. Our only question now is, how is their ability to design and construction of a journey?

If you press down with a good amount of pressure in the middle of the keyboard resulted in the right frame of the road, which is due to all-plastic construction. Although he did not dip down terribly, yet it was certainly noticeable and can be a problem with users who normally press hard as you type.

The area above the keyboard and the screen was down even more when you press it, which can cause problems when traveling. Also the cover display folded too much for comfort and caused "ripples" in the bending of the corners inward.

The palmrests and bottom of the laptop were the only sectors to build solid. Overall, however, that the build quality is not what we would call the travel-friendly, and it is questionable durability - the notebook can be easily scratched or beat up if youre a heavy traveler.

The L735 is a bit of stretch and the material that you can update is simple: remove the two screws and pull up on the access panel and can be removed Toshiba hard drive and RAM. The L735 has two RAM slots for up to 8 GB of memory.

Ports and Features
Ports and the selection function of L735 is well above average. It has HDMI, VGA, three USB 2.0 ports and an 8-in-1 memory card reader (not to mention a Blu-ray). On the downside, it does not have USB 3.0 or eSATA port.

Memory card reader SD, SDHC, SDXC, miniSD, microSD, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Multi Media Card formats. Curiously, you will not be able to see the memory card reader, unless you pick up the laptop ... it is almost under the chassis.

Screen and speakers
L735 is a 13.3-inch glossy, backlit display to 720p. This is a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1366x768 resolution. Overall, the quality is below average for a portable low-class contrast ratio of 162:1 and the "sweet spot" viewing angles. The resolution is standard and expected, so that the contrast is low.

When the lid is tilted forward or backward, the images begin to distort at an angle of about 10 degrees, and the vertical direction, begin to distort the images of about 30 degrees off center. The backlighting is uneven, too - jump to 160 nits brightness to 199 nits, depending on the region. Although the glossy screen does help a little clarity and overall quality of the screen.

The notebook has two small speakers, Conexant Smart Audio HD. There are two of them located above the keyboard, and there is also a subwoofer on the bottom. The position of the speakers will help bring the sound and out of the ears. The sound quality is average if you take the Windows and Dolby audio enhancements is improved, nothing too big, but it makes the listening experience much more enjoyable. All in all, sounds crisp and there is a good number of highs and lows.

Keyboard and touchpad
L735 with a full keyboard, which is a blend of style "chiclet" and traditional look. The keys are flat, slightly raised, and extend the bottom. They are also spaced a little help for the main cast. Toshiba has included a separate keys for page up / down, home, delete, and end keys.

Keys provide excellent responsiveness and ability to travel is great. Not only that, but the keys have a smooth surface and uniform thickness, making it extremely comfortable writing experience. The only complaint I have is that after about 10 minutes and write, to get the keys very clear, even if those glossy surface.

Multi-gesture touchpad, Synaptics is a bit rough layers, Toshiba has decided to help the fingers to move from place to place easier. Instead, it would be better if the surface is smooth and opaque. Although the touchpad works as it should, and provides an excellent non-jumpy cursor movement, the surface is slightly awkward to use. The touchpad is not bad, only it could have been better. The touchpad also has dedicated buttons that make clicking loud noise when used.

Performance and Benchmarks
Intel Core i5-2410M dual-core 2.3GHz and 4GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 memory for multitasking worked well, we were very pleased with its ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously - Video, Microsoft Office, music, and many other programs could all run at the same time without interruption.

Portable can also play video at 1080p, even though it is native support for 720p content, and integrated Intel HD graphics. In this price range, the only device that is a bit of confusion to a hard disk speed at 5400. According to Crystal Disk Mark, the head of the hard drive is about 87 MB / sec read speed.

The reference score below also shows that the L735 will not be a problem most of the tasks of handling, you throw it away from the game. The L735 was almost as well as the latest generation of the popular Dell Inspiron 15R with respect to synthetic scores go.

Battery Life
Our review unit has a 6-cell Li-Ion (48Wh, 12.1). In our test battery Standard Life, we put Windows 7 to the power profile "balanced", reduced the brightness to 70%, have Wi-Fi, and cooled in a Web page every minute. The L735 lasted 3 hours and 38 minutes, we were surprised by this result because laptops with similar hardware was able to exceed four hours.

The heat and noise
The L735 has a pair of openings to control the temperature on the bottom and a main exhaust duct on the right side. During the execution of our benchmark tests, the maximum temperature reached anywhere in L735 was 98 degrees Fahrenheit.

This temperature was taken at the center of the bottom panel of the laptop. The lowest recorded temperature was 79 degrees, taken on the left side of the touchpad. Both palmrests remained very cool during testing. We were extremely pleased with its results; L735 is a very user-friendly portable lap. As for the noise is even working on a large capacity laptop emits almost no noise.

Conclusion
The Toshiba Satellite L735 laptop is a price sensitive than the offer of a good performance, solid. It also has a comfortable keyboard, a pretty good selection of port and a Blu-ray. The design is also something to keep in mind that it has a tendency stained red "Dot Matrix" style throughout the book to a close. Glossy surfaces are almost everywhere, however - palmrests around the screen and the top of the screen - and that means that the laptop will become central points, because fingerprints.

Although this notebook is easy to carry around during the day to travel, build quality could endanger the life of a laptop in the long term. We found that the display quality of the cover is the most important factor in this, is fragile and easily bent.

Another deterrent may be the battery, we clocked only about three hours and means of transport to visit, while some other machines with similar devices are able to pull 56 more than four hours of battery life. Finally, they just can not expect perfection in this price range, and we believe that the performance of the method of selecting the port and the keyboard are some of the most important factors in choosing a laptop computer.
